Modern Home Economics: cultivating self-sufficiency and life skills for the modern age

Self-Sufficiency and Life Skills for the Modern Age

One of the things I have come to appreciate as I get older is that I can still play dress up. My style has developed to be somewhat retro – somewhere between the 40s and early 60s. I tend to mix in more modern pieces as well so I don’t look like I’m wearing a costume (unless I feel like it.)

So this post is a bit more for the girls than the boys. Growing up, I didn’t wear a lot of makeup; I learned pretty much the bare basics and whatever I learned from having my makeup done for special events. Then, a couple of years ago, I stumbled across Lisa Eldridge while looking for retro-style makeup tutorials. She’s such a fabulous makeup artist, and she is great at emphasizing natural beauty – whether it’s a part of a natural look or an editorial one.

She also covers the basics of choosing your makeup – how to pick foundation, how to apply false lashes (and remove them!), information on primer and concealer.

Two of my favorite posts of late:

The “No-Makeup” Makeup Look

The Ultimate All Occasion Makeup

As you can see, both are fairly subtle – but so is the retro makeup that I tend to emulate. (I tend to use red lipstick with the second look.) Both of these looks are a great starting place for people just getting into makeup.

Do you tend to wear makeup? What is your favorite part about playing with makeup?
