Last week we talked about your bedtime routine. Let’s skip over the 7-8 hours of sleep you’re getting (right?) and talk about establishing a morning routine.
How early you need to get up depends on you. Are you a morning person? Do you hop out of bed without an alarm? Or are you a night person and would rather be up late and wake late?
I like to start with what time I need to leave the house. What things do you need to do before you leave? Get dressed, I’m sure. Take a shower? (Or do you shower at night?) Put on makeup and do hair? Eat breakfast? (Right?) Do you want time for some quiet time or meditation? Make a list of everything you want to do in the mornings and about how long you think they will take.
Subtract that time from your leaving time and that should give you the time you need to get up. That being said, do you have too much that you are wanting to do and your getting up time is looking like 4:00am or earlier? Consider what is most important and start with that. You may find that you’ve over-estimated the amount of time tasks will take – or over-estimated. This is a starting point. Experiment and make adjustments. Your routine may take a little longer than you expect at first as you make everything a habit. Don’t be discouraged and assume that you will become more efficient and shave a little bit of time off the total time. That being said, don’t expect it to shave off 30-60 minutes. If you are over that much time, cut something out for now.
The important thing to keep in mind is that nothing is set in stone. Find what works for you and allows you to get out of the house on time. If something changes, re-evaluate and make the changes you need to.
What is your favorite part of your morning routine?
