So you’ve finished The Deep Clean. Or maybe you’re still in the middle of it. The real question is, though, how do you maintain it so you don’t have to put as much effort into cleaning on an ongoing basis?
Remember our conversation about routines a couple of weeks ago? This is when you want to make sure you’re adding in those tasks that make deep cleaning not as much work in the future. If your kitchen floors have a tendency to look like a food fight happened by the end of the day, working in a daily sweeping/mopping might be in order for you. Perhaps your home isn’t super air tight (or you like to leave your windows open for ventilation), and your surfaces accumulate dust pretty quickly. For you, a once or twice a week quick dusting may keep people from writing in your dust.
My house gets dust bunnies like no one’s business due to my dogs. A weekly vacuuming session around the edges and across the area rugs is a must for me, especially since one of the rugs is dark…and the chihuahua is light. (Need I say more?)
For most people, keeping things picked up and put away goes a long way toward making your house look presentable. A quick 5 or ten minutes at the end of the day may be all it takes to make sure the dishes make it back into the kitchen, books or computers are packed up for the next day (or returned to where they belong), socks are put into the laundry hamper, and paper is taken care of – filed, recycled, or shredded.
Everyone’s houses and schedules are different. The good news is that you can try out a routine and see if it works for you. If it does – great! If it doesn’t – try something new.
